Regarding studies, the answer is yes and no. Studies show that beverages and foods with added sugar can be harmful to health. Sugar by itself is not high glycemic but in combination with processed carbohydrates can be a double whammy and should be limited or avoided. On the other hand studies show that the naturally-occurring sugar (fructose) in fruits and juices has been found to be healthy and can even control blood sugar.

Unfortunately some of us will have bad reactions to certain substances and foods. I was not aware of palpitation problems, as stevia is considered generally safe. Some people cannot stand the taste of stevia. I’ve been using stevia for years and cannot tell the difference from sugar in terms of taste.

The day everything switches to Stevia is the day I’m toast. Stevia triggers my heart into massive palpitations like mad. I seriously hope it doesn’t happen or I will be afraid to eat anything at all anymore. I already have to scan for the other fake sugars because they make me sick in multiple (unpleasant) ways. I thought I’d try moving over to Stevia and after just a day, I thought I was having a heart attack. Turns out…Stevia is a vasodilator…potentially deadly to people with cardiovascular conditions. I wasn’t consuming large amounts of it either. Teensy amounts, but apparently, just enough to sent my heart into a sort of tap dance number that makes River Dance look like amatuer hour. :-/

The experts note that sugar is sugar and all forms of it should be monitored in the diet.

One of my favorite organic breads with such a great list of ingredients use cane sugar. I would like to see more products with stevia instead.
