When fertilizer became available he started using it. As pesticides became available he began using them as well.
I very clearly remember him stating he would never go back to not using them. He taught me that using pesticides, fertilizers would result in higher yielding and healthier crops. When I made the switch to zero-till I saw another increase in yields on the same land my grandfather farmed.

But the use of a can of pop as representative of all pesticides is an oversimplification. Each pesticide is used at a rate specific for that pesticide, and it is not always the same rate. Some use even less than a can of pop per acre, some use more.
